BERLIN

I had the chance to leave for three days in Berlin at the end of April. Three beautiful and warm days.

I did not see anything of the cold, gray Berlin that I imagined. The Berlin I saw is beautiful and huge. He is also young, welcoming and very cool.

With the good weather, I was able to cycle through the city. I think it's the best way to explore this very big city on a sunny day. The streets are all wide and there are bike paths absolutely everywhere.

I was in the idea of bringing a lot of images with my X-T2 and the only lens I had brought with me, the 35mm that a friend had kindly lent me.

I hesitated a lot to take a 50mm too, but I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, and my favorite focal length. I also wanted to test myself on 35mm because I was still hesitating to buy one ...

And then starting with one lens, I put my camera around the neck in the morning and I keep it until the evening, without wasting time to change lenses, without imagining the scene to be photographed in another way, tighter or wider. The bag is lighter and the head more free.

Of course the 50mm has sometimes failed me, but I think I will repeat this experience of "one fixed focal length".

In the end I did not do so many images, and I was only moderately satisfied with myself and my photos when I emptied my SD cards on my computer. I think I had more head for travel and exploration than for photography. It's hard to reconcile the two ...

I started to sort and retouch some, and I thought they were not good enough. I decided to drop a few weeks, to let the photos ripen and to forget them for a while ...

It was a good thing to do I think, because during my second sorting I rediscovered some photos that I did not like at first.

Usually, I try to retouch all the pictures in the same gallery in the same way, that they all have more or less the same tones. But I left a lot of freedom this time in the editing. I did not want to impose these rules.

Street photography is definitely my favorite practice.

J’ai eu la chance de partir trois jours à Berlin fin avril. Trois superbes jours beaux et chauds.

Je n’ai rien vu du Berlin froid et gris que je m’imaginais. Le Berlin que j’ai vu est beau et immense. Il est aussi jeune, accueillant et très cool.

Avec le beau temps, j’ai pu parcourir la ville en vélo. Je pense que c’est le mode de transport le plus adapté pour explorer cette très grande ville quand il fait beau. Les rues sont toutes larges et il y a des pistes cyclables absolument partout.

J'étais parti dans l’idée de ramener beaucoup d’images avec mon X-T2 et le seul objectif que j’avais amené avec moi, le 35mm qu’une amie m’avait gentiment prêté.

J’ai longuement hésité à prendre un 50mm aussi, mais je voulais sortir de ma zone de confort, et de ma focale préférée. Je voulais aussi me tester sur du 35mm parce que j'hésitais encore à m’en acheter un ...

Et puis en partant avec un seul objectif, je passe mon appareil autour du cou le matin et je le garde jusqu’au soir, sans perdre de temps à changer d’objectif, sans m'imaginer la scène à photographier d’une autre manière, plus serrée ou plus large. Le sac est plus léger et la tête plus libre.

Bien sûr le 50mm m’a certaines fois manqué, mais je crois que je renouvellerai cette expérience du « une seule focale fixe ».

Au final je n’ai pas fait tant d’images que ça, et je n’étais que très moyennement satisfait de moi et de mes photos lorsque j’ai vidé mes cartes SD sur mon ordi. Je pense que j’avais la tête plus au voyage et à l’exploration qu’à la photo. C’est dur de concilier les deux ...

J’ai commencé à faire le tri et à en retoucher certaines, et je me disais qu’elles n’étaient pas assez bien. J’ai alors décidé de laisser tomber quelques semaines, de laisser mûrir les photos et de les oublier quelque temps ...

C'était une bonne chose à faire je crois, car lors de mon deuxième tri j’ai redécouvert certaines photos que je trouvais quelconques dans un premier temps.

D’habitude, j’essaye de retoucher toutes les images d’une même galerie de la même manière, qu’elles aient toutes plus ou moins les mêmes tonalités. Mais je me suis laissé beaucoup de liberté cette fois-ci dans la retouche. Je n’avais pas envie de m’imposer ces règles.
