A few more tests with the square Polaroid format.

The square format in photography.

On several occasions I tried setting my camera to 1:1 aspect ratio to see what I could get out of it. But the tests carried out were never conclusive. I have a lot of difficulty dealing with these dimensions. Aside from centering the subject or applying the rule of thirds, I always felt cramped. It’s certainly me who never knew how to tame this format but I always had the impression that the shot was missing something to make it stand out from the crowd.

While sorting through old photos on Lightroom, and rediscovering some very banal images that reminded me of snapshots, I once again wanted to try the experiment and get completely into the theme by giving them a Polaroid style as if they came out of a camera of this type.

In the end, I still don't like this format. But it’s a pretty cool experiment to do and I’m sharing the results of these tests with you here.

A plusieurs reprises, j’ai essayé de régler mon appareil au format 1:1 pour voir ce que je pouvais en sortir. Mais les tests réalisés n’ont jamais été concluants. J’ai beaucoup de mal à composer avec ces dimensions. Mis à part centrer le sujet ou appliquer la règle des tiers, je me suis toujours senti à l’étroit. C’est certainement moi qui n’ai jamais su apprivoiser ce format mais j’ai toujours eu l’impression qu’il manquait quelque chose au cliché pour qu’il sorte du lot.

Lors d’un tri d’anciennes photos sur Lightroom, et en redécouvrant certaines images très banales qui me faisaient penser à des instantanés, j’ai de nouveau eu envie de tenter l’expérience et de rentrer complètement dans le thème en leur donnant un style Polaroid comme si elles sortaient d’un appareil de ce type.

Au final, je n’aime toujours pas ce format. Mais c’est une expérience assez sympa à réaliser et je vous partage ici le résultat de ces essais.

PARIS | THE BOAT

I thought I'd be back on this blog in September, and a few photo projects I needed to finish have been hanging around a bit …

I will have a little more time on my hands from now on and I must admit that this relieves me quite a bit after these four somewhat stressful months.


In December 2021, I spent a few days in Paris and I brought back a lot of images. I never really knew how to share them here.

I am coming back to these photos at the moment. They will arrive here slowly. In the form of small articles with a very specific subject.

Je pensais être de retour sur ce blog en septembre, et quelques projets photos que je devais terminer ont un peu trainé …

Je vais avoir un peu plus de temps devant moi à partir de maintenant et je dois avouer que cela me soulage pas mal après ces quatre mois un peu stressants.


En décembre 2021, j’ai passé quelques jours à Paris et j’ai ramené beaucoup d’images. Je n’ai jamais trop su comment les partager ici.

Je reviens en ce moment sur ces photos. Elles arriveront ici doucement. Sous la forme de petits articles avec un sujet bien précis.

FEW HOURS IN LAS PALMAS

After a first week on the island of a thousand volcanoes, we spent the second part of the trip in Gran Canaria.

This island is different from Lanzarote. And we chose it precisely for that.

Unlike Lanzarote, where volcanic eruptions swept away everything in their path, Gran Canaria is much richer in biodiversity. Nature is very present here. It is greener, more mountainous, less volcanic. This island is nicknamed the miniature continent because the landscapes can be so different and varied.

But despite all this, and even if we had a great time there and saw magnificent landscapes, I don't really know what to think of this Canary island. We knew it had nothing to do with Lanzarote, and that it was even more touristy. But we thought the island was going to be a little more unspoiled than what we could see in places.

In short, the feeling is rather mixed. And I think we tasted and plunged into mass tourism and the anarchic urbanization of the Canary Islands…

I swapped my film camera for digital and I will share here my experience of Gran Canaria in small articles.

I start with some street photography in the biggest city on the island where we spent a few hours.

Après une première semaine sur l’île aux mille volcans, nous avons passé la deuxième partie du voyage à Gran Canaria.

Cette île est différente de Lanzarote. Et nous l’avons justement choisie pour cela.

A la différence de Lanzarote, où les éruptions volcaniques ont tout emporté sur leur passage, Gran Canaria est beaucoup plus riche en biodiversité. La nature est bien présente ici. C’est plus vert, plus montagneux, moins volcanique. Cette île est surnommée le continent miniature tellement les paysages peuvent être différents et variés.

Mais malgré tout cela, et même si nous y avons passé des super moments et vu des paysages magnifiques, je ne sais pas trop quoi penser de cette île des Canaries. Nous savions que ça n’avait rien à voir avec Lanzarote, et que c’était plus touristique encore. Mais nous pensions que l’île allait être un peu plus préservée que ce que nous avons pu voir par endroits.

Bref, le sentiment est plutôt mitigé. Et je pense que nous avons gouté et plongé dans le tourisme de masse et l’urbanisation anarchique des îles Canaries …

J’ai échangé mon appareil argentique pour le numérique et je partagerai ici mon expérience de Gran Canaria dans des petits articles.

Je commence par un peu de street photo dans la ville la plus grande de l’île ou nous avons passé quelques heures.

C’était une journée au milieu de la mer, une journée qui pédale, pleine de poussière. C’était une de ces journées en famille. Quand un enfant râle parce qu’il a mal aux jambes. Parce que ça monte, parce que ça ne descend pas assez. C’était une journée parfois bleue, parfois grise. Une journée épuisante. Mais c’était la nôtre, et elle était belle.

WHEN IT'S TIME TO CHOOSE

This year is important for her. One of those key years. There are a few deadlines, a few choices to make ... and surely a bit of ongoing and upcoming stress.

There are days when she wants to go away, days when she wants to stay, many days when she no longer knows.

There are days when she no longer needs us, there are still days when she asks for help.

She knows that all these choices will not be final. And that our arms are always there to catch her if she stumbles.

Hier, je tournais autour de la table de la salle à manger avec un petit monstre dans mes bras pour essayer de l’endormir.

Aujourd’hui, il a bien grandi le petit monstre. Il est aussi grand que moi. Oui je sais, ce n’est pas un exploit …

Cette année est importante pour elle. Une des ces années clés. Il y a quelques échéances, quelques choix à faire … et sûrement un peu de stress en cours et à venir.

Il y a des jours où elle veut partir loin, des jours où elle veut rester, beaucoup de jours où elle ne sait plus.

Il y des jours où elle n’a plus besoin de nous, il y a encore des jours où elle demande de l’aide.

Elle sait que tous ces choix ne seront pas définitifs. Et que nos bras sont toujours là pour la rattraper si elle trébuche.

NEWS FROM THE ROAD

After only a few weeks of existence, I deleted my Instagram account dedicated to film photography. It is now complicated to open an account on this social network. My main account never really "took off", it was a very bad idea to open another one ...

And then officially, the platform is now turning to video content to compete with TikTok and leaving photography and the photographers who made it famous aside. I admit that I am seriously starting to hate using this application even though I am still trying to keep my account alive. But until when ?

We will see what Instagram will become. It's pretty blurry and abstract at the moment, just like these images that follow ...

Après seulement quelques semaines d’existence, mon compte Instagram dédié à la photographie argentique n’est plus. C’est aujourd’hui compliqué d’ouvrir un compte sur ce réseau social. Déjà que mon compte principal n’a jamais vraiment “décollé”, c’était une très mauvaise idée d’en ouvrir un autre …

Et puis officiellement, la plateforme se tourne maintenant vers du contenu vidéo afin de concurrencer TikTok et laisse la photographie et les photographes qui ont fait sa renommée de côté. J’avoue que je commence sérieusement à détester utiliser cette application même si j’essaie malgré tout de faire encore vivre mon compte. Mais jusqu’à quand ?

Nous verrons bien ce qu’Instagram va devenir. C’est assez flou et abstrait pour le moment, tout comme ces images qui suivent …
